Sustainability Beyond Solar Panels

At CRG Direct, our commitment to sustainability doesn't stop at installing solar panels, heat pumps, and battery systems. We believe that every part of our business should reflect the values we promote to our customers. That includes the very website you're reading right now.

In February 2026, we conducted a comprehensive carbon audit of all 82 public pages on crgdirect.co.uk using the Website Carbon Calculator. The headline numbers speak for themselves:

  • 0.034g CO₂ per page view — our site-wide average
  • Cleaner than 94% of all websites globally
  • Up to 63x less carbon than poorly optimised competitor websites

Full Site Carbon Audit Results

We tested every public page against the Website Carbon API, which calculates the CO₂ emissions produced each time a page is loaded.

Carbon RatingPagesPercentage
A+7895%
A22.5%
B11%
C11%
95% of our pages achieve the highest possible carbon rating of A+, and every page on the site now rates C or above. There are zero D, E, or F ratings anywhere on crgdirect.co.uk.

Page-by-Page Performance

Here's how our key pages perform individually:

Even our image-heavy pages like the gallery — which showcases real photographs of completed installations, not stock imagery — achieve an A rating thanks to lazy loading, responsive image sizing, and modern WebP compression.

How We Compare

The average website transfers approximately 2,980 KB per page load. A poorly optimised competitor website in our industry — one loaded with uncompressed images, heavy tracking scripts, and bloated frameworks — can easily produce 2.16g of CO₂ per page view (an F rating on the Website Carbon Calculator).

MetricF-Rated CompetitorIndustry AverageCRG Direct

CO₂ per View2.16g0.50g0.034g
Carbon RatingFC / DA+
Annual CO₂ (10k views/month)259 kg60 kg4.1 kg
That means our website produces 63x less carbon per page view than a poorly built competitor and 15x less than the industry average. Over a year with 10,000 monthly page views, that's 255 kg of CO₂ saved compared to an F-rated site.

What Makes Our Website Green

These results come from deliberate technology choices at every level of the stack — not just picking a green host and calling it done.

Green Hosting on Google Cloud

Our site runs on Firebase App Hosting, powered by Google Cloud infrastructure. Google Cloud has been carbon neutral since 2007 and matches 100% of its energy consumption with renewable energy purchases. The Website Carbon Calculator recognises this as verified green hosting.

75% Smaller Server Footprint

Our production server runs in a 512 MB container — compared to the 2 GB typically required by heavier frameworks. That's a 75% reduction in compute resources per server instance, which directly translates to less energy consumed per request served. Less compute, less cooling, less carbon.

Built with SvelteKit

We chose SvelteKit specifically because it compiles away at build time. Unlike heavier frameworks that ship large runtime bundles to the browser, SvelteKit produces only the minimal JavaScript needed for each page. Our JavaScript footprint averages just 23 KB per page — a fraction of what most modern websites require.

Server-Side Rendering

Every page is rendered on the server, meaning the HTML arrives complete and ready to display. There's no waiting for JavaScript to download and render content in the browser. This means faster load times for you and less energy consumed by your device.

Optimised Images

All images are served in modern WebP format with responsive sizing, and images below the fold are lazy-loaded — meaning they only download when you scroll to them. This prevents unnecessary data transfer on every page visit.

No Tracking Bloat

We don't load heavy third-party analytics scripts, social media widgets, or advertising trackers. On many websites, these tracking scripts account for 30–50% of total page weight. We chose to respect both your privacy and the planet.

Resource Breakdown

Every byte transferred has a carbon cost. Here's where our average page weight comes from:

Resource TypeAverage Size% of Total
HTML Content66 KB17%
CSS Stylesheets104 KB26%
JavaScript23 KB6%
Images196 KB49%
Fonts0 KB0%
Total387 KB100%
JavaScript makes up just 6% of our total page weight. For comparison, the average website's JavaScript payload alone — before any images, CSS, or HTML — is often larger than our entire page.

The Bigger Picture: Digital Sustainability

The internet accounts for approximately 3.7% of global carbon emissions — roughly equivalent to the entire aviation industry. Every website visit consumes electricity: in the data centre serving the page, across the networks transmitting the data, and in the device displaying it.

For a company dedicated to renewable energy and reducing carbon emissions, having an energy-hungry website would be contradictory. We practice what we preach.

What This Means in Real Terms

Based on estimated traffic of 10,000 monthly page views:

MeasureF-Rated CompetitorIndustry AverageCRG Direct
Monthly CO₂21.6 kg5.0 kg0.34 kg
Annual CO₂259 kg60 kg4.1 kg
5-Year CO₂1,296 kg300 kg20.4 kg
Over a 5-year period, our lean approach prevents roughly 1,275 kg of CO₂ compared to a poorly optimised competitor — and 280 kg compared to the average website. Simply by being built efficiently.

Continuous Monitoring

This carbon audit isn't a one-off exercise. We've built automated tooling to regularly measure the carbon footprint of every page on our site, ensuring that as we add new content and features, we maintain our sustainability standards.

When we identify pages that exceed our targets, we work to optimise them through better image compression, responsive image sizing, and efficient page layouts.

Sustainability Is a Core Value

At CRG Direct, we help homeowners and businesses reduce their carbon footprint through solar panels, battery storage, heat pumps, and energy efficiency improvements. But sustainability isn't just what we sell — it's how we operate.

From the renewable energy installations we complete across Hampshire, Southampton, Portsmouth, and beyond, to the 512 MB server container running this website, every decision we make considers its environmental impact.

0.034g CO₂ per page view. Cleaner than 94% of all websites. Up to 63x less carbon than poorly optimised competitors. That's sustainability from end to end.
