Gas boiler vs heat pump vs solar — compare real running costs for your home

Compare Heating Running Costs

Select your property size and current heating system. We'll show you the annual running cost for each option using the latest Ofgem Q1 2026 energy prices.

Property Size

How the Calculator Works

Our calculator uses the latest Ofgem Q1 2026 price cap rates and real-world efficiency data to estimate your annual heating costs across different systems.

Energy Prices

We use the Ofgem price cap rates effective January 2026: electricity at 27.69p/kWh and gas at 5.93p/kWh. Oil and LPG rates are current market averages.

System Efficiency

Gas boiler efficiencies range from 80% (older models) to 92% (modern condensing). Heat pumps achieve a seasonal COP of 3.1, meaning each kWh of electricity produces 3.1 kWh of heat.

Heating Demand

Property sizes are based on Ofgem Typical Domestic Consumption Values. A medium (3-bed) home uses approximately 11,500 kWh/year for heating. You can override this with your actual usage.

10-Year Costs

The 10-year comparison includes indicative installation costs minus available grants. This shows the true cost of ownership, not just running costs.
